One patient’s story

“For the first time in my entire life, I feel HAPPY! I was previously diagnosed with PTSD and severe anxiety. Ever since childhood, life has been a struggle for me. I have suffered with sleep issues, memory problems, depression and the inability to focus. I would startle easily and was fearful of people simply walking past me. There has been a general progression of improvement and life is just getting better & better to the point where I woke up one morning and felt “happy”. I have never felt this way before and wish I had known about this program sooner. At 37 years old, I now have a better outlook on life, have just transitioned to a new and better job, bought my first home on my own and started into a new relationship with someone.” – Melissa H.

What’s happening in the brain for someone who suffers from anxiety and panic attacks?

Research shows that anxiety disorders can be due to too many Beta (High Frequency) brainwaves on the right side of the brain. These types of brain waves occur naturally when a person is awake and concentrating. Too many Beta brainwaves, however, can lead to anxiety and worry. Panic attacks are extreme cases of this imbalance, and due to the very nature of the anxiety attack itself, are very difficult to control on your own.

How does neurofeedback work?

Neurofeedback helps the brain refocus and operate better. The process is non-invasive, safe and requires very little effort by the client.

Neurofeedback has 3 main goals:

  1. Identify irregular brainwaves (Alpha, Beta, Delta and Theta)
  2.  Guide those brainwaves back into regular patterns. (reduce Beta brainwaves in the right side of the brain for those who suffer from anxiety and panic attacks)
  3. Teach the brain to maintain regular patterns permanently

Neurofeedback monitors brainwaves on the surface of your head by placing small electrodes on your scalp. For the next 30 minutes, you get to watch a movie of your choice, listen to music or listen to audible tones. That is all that is required of you. It is non-invasive, uses no drugs and does not involve any radiation.
During a normal session, the computer is monitoring your brainwaves for any that are out of the normal range. When it finds one, the system triggers a response that changes the movie or music. This change is subtle enough to get your brain’s attention and make your brain focus more. Refocusing corrects the irregular brainwaves which then move into the normal range. At that time, the movie or music will resume normally. This process is called Operant Conditioning. Over the course of multiple sessions, the brain eventually learns to make healthy patterns on its own.
The training sessions are pleasant and enjoyable. All you do is relax, listen to music or watch a favorite movie. Over time, your brain reaches harmony, and the anxiety and panic attacks symptoms are no longer present. Once this is accomplished no further neurofeedback sessions are needed.
